Exploring the corners of Tierra del Fuego on horseback is a different way to enjoy its charms. The criollo horse is the ideal animal, since it adapts very well to the different terrain conditions.
The ride is in charge of experienced guides, who will share stories and their knowledge of the local area. They will take you across rocky trails, rivers, streams, dense forests and peat bogs.
In the surroundings of Ushuaia it is possible to take short trail rides, with an average duration of 2 hours, and longer rides of up to 7 hours.
An easy horse ride borders a river shore, the Río Pipo, following the trail that the inmates of Ushuaia's old prison used to take to supply firewood to the town. This option is suitable for those who have no experience in horseback riding, as the terrain is mostly flat and does not present great difficulties.
During the ride you can appreciate the beauty of the Pipo River valley, framed by the mountain range that extends to the west.

It is also possible to reach the National Park, going along the shores of the Beagle Channel.  This ride lasts approximately 4 hours and has a medium difficulty.
Another interesting ride will take you to the top of Monte Susana. This hill has an approximate height of 500 meters above sea level, and from the summit you can see a fantastic panoramic view of the city of Ushuaia, the surrounding valleys, the Beagle Channel and the Navarino Islands in Chile.
The path goes through the slopes of Mount Susana, crossing dense forests of lengas, ñires, guindos and notros. When descending, another path will lead you to the coast, where you can observe species of marine birds such as cauquenes, ducks and bandurrias.  This ride takes about two hours, and has a medium level of difficulty.

Another low-difficulty ride can be done starting from the "Tierra Mayor" winter resort.  The ride will take you across a plain and a river, until you reach the forest that extends at the foot of a mountain, the Cerro Bonete.  Here you can enjoy an excellent view of the valley and ride along an old lumberjack trail.

For more experienced riders who wish to do horseback riding and camping, there are more extensive itineraries. To hire these excursions, you must contact the tour operators in advance.
