Sailing the Beagle Channel

Birds, sea lions, Les Eclaireurs lighthouse and the southern archipelago surrounded by majestic mountains: sailing the Beagle Channel is an not-to-be missed experience. You can take one hour tours to Isla de los Pájaros and Isla de los Lobos, or embark on a trip of several hours that will take you to the east coast of the Beagle Channel, to learn about the history of an old estancia and see a colony of Magellanic penguins up close.

The different tours offer magnificent views of the city of Ushuaia, the mountain range, Mount Olivia, and the estancias Harberton and Túnel, located to the east of the channel.

Classic Beagle Channel Cruise :  This navigation goes through Isla de los Pájaros and Isla de los Lobos, places where you can see birds such as albatrosses, cormorants, skuas, seagulls, petrels and sea lions. Another highlight is the famous  Les Eclaireurs lighthouse , a popular spot for taking pictures.

This lighthouse, whose name in French means "the scouts", was built in 1920 and is 11 meters high. It has been mistakenly called "the lighthouse at the end of the world", after Jules Verne's novel, however the writer's inspiration comes from the lighthouse of San Juan de Salvamento , located in Isla de los Estados (Staten Island).

This tour has an average duration of one hour and the boat returns to the city docks sailing through the  Bridges Archipelago and Paso Chico.

Classic cruise with Hike: It has a similar itinerary to the previous one, with the addition of a brief descent in  Karelo Island or H Island , where you can take a walk and enjoy a 360º panoramic view of the Beagle Channel.

The hike is of low difficulty, and takes about 10-15 minutes along a 160 meters trail. In this place you can observe sea birds and archaeological remains such as Yamana shell middens.

The Beagle Channel and Andes Fueguinos Viewpoint has signs with information about the mountain range that can be seen to the north, east and west.  Visitors can also get more information through a QR code.

Penguin Colony and Estancia Harberton : this tour includes the classic spots in the Beagle Channel (Isla de los Pájaros, Isla de los Lobos, and Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse) and then sails east towards Martillo Island, home of a colony of Magellanic penguins.

These birds are found on Martillo Island from the beginning of October until April, but the greatest number of penguins can be observed between the months of November and February.

After visiting the penguin colony, the boat arrives at Estancia Harberton, where passengers can disembark and take a guided tour through the ranch and visit the Museum of Birds and Marine Mammals "Acatushun".

Combined tours:   This option offers the possibility of touring the Rio Pipo Valley and reach the National Park aboard the End of the World Train. In Lapataia Bay, passengers embark on a catamaran to sail eastward along the Beagle Channel, visiting Isla de los Lobos, Isla de los Pájaros and Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse.

Isla Redonda: Inside the National Park, the navigation departs from the dock located in Ensenada Bay. The tour is done in semi-rigid boats that disembark at Isla Redonda, where the visitor can explore the place walking along marked trails. From this location there is a unique panoramic view of the Beagle Channel and the coast of the National Park.

A particular attraction of this small island is a post office that was used by sailors and visitors to send postcards and mail, years ago. Today, the post office is located at Ensenada Bay.

Crossing to Puerto Williams (Chile):   A way to contemplate the Beagle Channel from a different perspective is to cross to the Chilean sector of the island, to the town of Puerto Williams.
